EN 'Cartography of the Motherland’ is an ongoing project, exploring the transformative journey experienced by women as they transition into motherhood. The project emerged from my own experience of becoming a mother, and the profound changes that occur within the body, as well as emotionally, psychologically, spiritually, socially.
Through the lens of motherhood, the body undergoes a metamorphosis that ignites a shift in identity. Like a sacred land where new territories are charted, this project unveils the complexity of attachment, connection, nurturing, guiding, aging.
These portraits serve as visual maps, capturing the intricate landscapes of the motherland. By drawing parallels with the natural world, the project proposes personal questions about identity as a migrant mothering far from my birth land(Peru). The diptychs also explore the idea of searching for guidance in nature through our own transitions, understanding that there are more similarities between our bodies than we can anticipate.
Mapping the changes we undergo can create connection, and understanding of our own transformation as one, we share collectively. This project aspires to provide much needed ties between women and mothers, to the lonely landscape that Motherhood can be.
